Academic Details of the BS Programme

General Information

Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has invited applications for admission to the four-year Bachelor of Science (B.S) Programme for 2013. The four-year BS Programme is organized into eight semesters. The final semester is devoted exclusively to a research project. The major disciplines available in the BS Programme are Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Materials, Mathematics and Physics. The batch of students joining in 2013 will graduate in June 2017.

Students specializing in any of the above disciplines will have to take a set of prescribed core and elective courses in the chosen discipline. They will also take courses in Engineering, Humanities and Inter-disciplinary areas for a well-rounded learning experience. While a student specializes in a major discipline, he/she can also broaden his/her knowledge and skills by taking courses in other disciplines. Students who take a sufficient number of designated courses in a discipline other than their major will qualify for a ‘minor’ in that discipline. The combination of courses taken by a student will be listed in his/her Degree certificate.

Applicant should have completed their II PUC / 12th standard in 2012. Those who are expecting to complete their II PUC / 12th standard in 2013 are also eligible to apply. Applicant must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main subjects during their II PUC / 12th Standard. Those who have studied Biology, Statistics, Electronics, Computer Science etc., in addition to Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are also eligible to apply. The candidates must have secured a first class or 60% or equivalent grade (relaxed to pass class for SC/ST candidates) in the II PUC / 12th standard examination.

About 120 students will be admitted to the Programme. Seats will be allotted to general and special categories as per Government regulations. Reservation for SC/ ST/ OBC/ Physically-Handicapped (PH) and Kashmiri-Migrant (KM) candidates will be as per Government of India regulations, and following the National List. The Institute uses the merit lists of existing highly competitive national level entrance examinations such as KVPY, IIT-JEE (Main and Advanced) and NEET-UG for admission to the BS Programme. Students desirous of applying to the BS Programme must take at least one of these above examinations.

Under the KVPY scheme, those in KVPY-SA (appeared in 2011, and selected for the Fellowship), KVPY-SB (appeared in 2012 and selected for the Fellowship), KVPY-SX (appeared in 2012 and selected for the Fellowship) and KVPY Fellows selected through the Empowerment Initiative for SC/ST candidates are eligible. Under the IIT-JEE-Main stream, those appearing in 2013 and securing a minimum of 60% (GN), 54% (OBC-NCL) and 30% (SC/ST/PH) are eligible.

In the IIT-JEE-Advanced stream, those appearing in 2013 and securing a minimum of 60% (GN), 54% (OBC-NCL) and 30% (SC/ST/PH) are eligible. In the NEET-UG stream, those appearing in 2013 and getting selected in the main merit list are eligible for admission to the BS Programme.

The selection will be based on the performance of the candidates who have applied in any one of the National level examinations listed above. A separate merit list of candidates who have applied will be prepared for each of these national examinations and the seats will be offered based on the performance in the examination and the number of seats available. A candidate who has qualified in multiple examinations listed above will be included in all the appropriate merit lists. Separate merit lists will be prepared for candidates belonging to different reserved categories, as per standard Government of India regulations.

Application can be submitted only online. The online application may be submitted by at the IISc website www.iisc.ernet.in/ug up to 30th April 2013. The application fee is Rs. 400/- for GN/OBC/KM candidates and Rs. 200/- for SC/ST/PH categories. This can be paid online using Net-banking, Visa Card/ Master Card, Debit/Credit Cards. As the first step, the online application is to be completed by following the specific instructions provided at the website for receiving applications, on or before 30th April 2013. Specific instructions for filling the online application form are available at the UG website http://www.iisc.ernet.in/ug.

Applicant should click on the ‘online application link’, to open the ‘Admissions 2013’, page and then click on the ‘Instructions for filling the Application Form’, link to read the instructions or to download a file that contains the instructions. Online Applications will be accepted up to April 30, 2013.

The first set of admission offers will be made to KVPY candidates in May 2013. The next set of admission offers will be announced in the middle of June 2013. More offers for admission will be made in July 2013. Candidates who are offered admission will be invited for mandatory day-long counselling sessions at the Institute. Classes will commence on 1st August 2013.

The annual Tuition Fee is Rs.10,000/-. Other fee and deposits are also there. Depending on their performance in national examinations such as KVPY, IITJEE (Main and Advanced), and NEET-UG, students will be able to avail themselves of the standard fellowships offered by agencies such as KVPY and DST-INSPIRE. Those who travel to the Institute for attending the counselling are eligible for reimbursement of Second-Class Railway / Bus fare by the shortest route from the place of residence to the Institute, both ways. POCE:

Project Oriented Chemical Education (POCE) is only for students studying in first year of three years BSc program (preferably with PCM combination).

The total number of Fellowships offered will be up to 10. Selected students will be given an opportunity to involve in programmes such as lectures, laboratory projects and research. The programme will be conducted during summer vacation for a period of 6 to 8 weeks. A scholarship of Rs. 6000/- per month will be provided. Students selected are expected to work at the Centre for three such consecutive summers. Where possible, students will be allowed to work in the Centre during mid-semester vacations as well. Specialization in advanced materials will be possible during the last year. After the successful completion of the programme at the end of 3 years, the students will a receive a Diploma in Chemistry from the Centre.

Those who complete the POCE programme with outstanding performance will be eligible for admission to the MS / PhD programme of the Centre subject to satisfactory performance in the interview.

POBE:

Only the students who are studying in first year of three years BSc program (preferably having Biology as one of the subjects) can apply for POBE.

Selected students are exposed to the concepts and methodologies driving integrative research in biology today, through a combination of lectures, laboratory projects and research. The programme will be conducted during the summer vacation for a period of 6 to 8 weeks. The total number of Fellowships offered will be up to 10. Scholarship of Rs. 6000/- per month will be provided. Students selected are expected to work at the Centre for three consecutive periods. After the successful completion of the programme at the end of 3 years, the students will a receive a diploma in Biology from the Centre. Where possible, students will be allowed to work in the Centre during mid-semester vacations as well. Specialization in a more focused area or research will be possible during the second and third years.

Those who complete the POBE programme with outstanding performance will be eligible for admission to the MS / PhD programme of the Centre subject to satisfactory performance in the interview.

FOR ADMISSION TO M.SC. PROGRAMMES:

Candidates seeking admission to various M.Sc. programmes of GITAM Institute of Science of GITAM University are required to appear for an entrance test GSAT - 2013 to be held at various centres in Andhra Pradesh and outside. Admission is based on the rank obtained in the entrance test.

Requirement for admission to all science programmes is a minimum aggregate of 50% marks in group (optional) subjects in the qualifying examination.

Candidates who have already passed qualifying examination or who have appeared/ are appearing for the final examinations in 2013 are also eligible.

The GSAT - 2013 consists of the following tests. In each test, there will be 60 multiple choice questions from the syllabus which can be downloaded from the GITAM website www.gitam.edu.  

Ranks will be given separately based on the performance in the respective tests.

FOR ADMISSION TO UG PROGRAMMES [BEM / 5 year Integrated M.Sc. and  CA]:

a) Merit fellowships will be awarded to 10% of students of each M.Sc. programme

@ Rs.2000/- per month depending upon their performance at the first semester end examinations.

Continuation of this fellowship depends on his/her performance in the first year.

b) Merit-cum-means scholarships will be awarded to 5% of students joining in various programmes of GITAM Institute of Science @Rs.2000/-per month depending on his/her performance in the first semester end examinations and income of the parent (subject to a maximum income of Rs.2,00,000/- per annum). Continuation of this scholarship depends on his/her performance in the first year of his/her study.

c) Two merit scholarships will be awarded in the name of Smt.Annapurna and Mr.Nageswara Rao Akkineni to out-going girl students of basic sciences, preferably coming from rural areas, @Rs.40,000/- every year.

• Candidates appearing for more than one test need to submit separate application along with the prescribed fee of Rs.300/- for each test.

HALL TICKETS

1. Hall tickets will be sent to candidates by post one week before the date of commencement of entrance test. In case of non-receipt of hall ticket in time, candidates are advised to contact the office of the Principal, GITAM Institute of Science, GITAM University at Tel No. (0891) 2840450/451/452 two days before the test date.

2. Hall ticket should be retained carefully as it has to be produced at the time of admission.

TEST PROCEDURE

1. Candidates are advised to come to the examination hall at least half an hour before the commencement of the test.

2. Candidates will not be admitted into the examination hall without hall ticket or after the commencement of the test. They will not be allowed to leave the examination hall before the stipulated time.

3. Calculators, cell phones, books, papers, logarithm tables, slide-rule or any other calculating aids are not allowed into the examination hall.

4. Candidates should answer only on the answer sheet.

5. The Chief Superintendent of the test centre can take disciplinary action on candidates involved in indiscipline, malpractice, impersonation, etc., and the answer scripts of such candidates will not be valued.

MERIT RANK

All candidates will be awarded GSAT - 2013 test-wise rank as per marks secured in the test appeared and they will be kept on the website.

RESERVATION OF SEATS

Admission to various courses of study shall be made on the basis of GSAT - 2013 rank and eligibility

criteria subject to the rule of reservation as applicable to GITAM University.
