Ph.D Admission Notification 2012-2013

Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences
Chemical Sciences

Exciting questions in the life sciences, be it on the origins of life or the complex choreography of cells that make up an organism and define its behavior, cannot always be confined within the boundaries of traditional disciplines. This creates the need for a class of scientists who are uninhibited to tackle problems that require resourcefulness and expertise across disciplines.

The goal of Interdisciplinary Biology PhD program is to  enable students to use a variety of experimental and computational tools to address important problems in biology.

Students with backgrounds in Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Engineering interested to work on biology related projects are strongly encouraged to apply. Any prior knowledge of Biology is not mandatory.

Our entrance exams are designed to select students with backgrounds in any of the basic sciences based on their reasoning abilities. Our interview panels will be composed of faculty members from various disciplines so that students can be assessed based on their strongest subjects.

Students selected in the Interdisciplinary Biology graduate program will have the opportunity to choose any of the basic or advanced courses offered at the institute to familiarize themselves to a new area or to supplement their existing knowledge of an area in the context of their research topic.

IISER Pune invites applications for its Interdisciplinary Biology Ph.D. program in the following research areas:
Computational neuroscience , neuronal networks
Computational cell biology, cytoskeletal dynamics, image analysis, pattern formation
Complex and dynamical systems, biophysics, pattern formation, statistical biophysics, protein folding
Population Dynamics, life-history evolution, simulations
Biomechanics of neurons: active responses and long distance signaling
Mathematical biology. Nonlinear dynamical systems, multiscale methods. Theoretical neuroscience, cardiac physiology and diabetes
Computational neuroscience, models of synaptic plasticity
Nanotechnology, atomic force microscopy and single molecular interactions
Biophysical Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biophysics
Origins of life, chemical biology
