Recent Advances in Pollution Prevention Technologies in Process Industries 22nd Oct – 26th Oct, 2012
Course Coordinators
Dr. Manish Vashishtha
Dr. S. K. Jana
Organizing Department
Department of Chemical Engineering
Malaviya National Institute of Technology
Aim/Objective
Environmental impact is one of the most serious challenges currently facing the chemical process industries. The staggering magnitude of industrial waste coupled with growing awareness of the consequences of discharging effluents in the natural resources has spurred the process industry to become more environmentally conscious and adopt a more proactive role.
Pollution prevention may include incremental changes to existing manufacturing infrastructure but it mainly involves substantial changes in industrial infrastructure. A holistic view is needed to address both these issues particularly in the case of process industries.
Process industries can especially benefit from advances in pollution prevention technologies. As worldwide environmental regulation becomes stricter, companies that incorporate pollution prevention technologies into their products and processes will gain competitive advantage.
Pollution prevention technologies also contribute to the health of the citizens by contributing to the security of food and water, and to improvements in environmental quality. Since the process industries contribute the largest share of environmental releases, and, in many respects, face the biggest challenges, it is useful to review how process industries are acting to develop and use innovative technologies to make significant reduction in their waste generation. The present course is aimed at understanding these new technologies.
